Briefly describe your job and responsibilities.
My responsibilities include overseeing the kitchen operation, planning menus for special events, supervising staff, managing inventory, ordering, ensuring food safety.
What does a “typical” day at work look like for you?
I start every morning with a cup of Latin coffee. I check emails for any new inquiries or large orders. I have short meetings with my restaurant manager to discuss follow-ups with clients and food ordering. We also discuss the food truck’s weekly schedule.
What was your first job in the hospitality industry?
During my time at culinary school, my husband and I decided to open a casual restaurant in a food court. We were open for over six years until we decided to leave our home country for political reasons.
Briefly describe your career path and how you got to where you are today.
As soon I graduated from high school I started studying a major in computer science, but after finishing I felt that it wasn’t the right decision. After several years and have two daughters, I finally found my passion. I started studying culinary arts and fell in love, the rest is history.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Definitely being able to share my roots and traditions though food can be a great experience.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Educating customers to make them understand that even when we speak the same language, Venezuelan food is different from Mexican food.
What advice would you give to students interested in your profession?
If any young person decided to join the culinary industry be aware that it can be challenging and difficult. Being part of a kitchen team demands many hours of work and could lead to physical and mental exhaustion and fatigue, but working with passion and dedication will make you feel good about yourself and your career.
What achievement are you most proud of?
I left my country ten years ago with my family and just two suitcases. I had to start over in a foreign country with a different language and culture. Every single thing that I have done and achieved to this day makes me and my family proud.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Because of my job, I only have one day off a week, so my days off are special. It is a priority for me to spend that day with my daughters, going out for dinner, shopping, or visiting new places.
What is your favorite food to make or eat?
Every traditional food from my country, but it is very special for me to make “Arroz con Pollo” (yellow rice with chicken and vegetables).
What’s at the top of your bucket list?
Professionally, introduce my signature sauce “Cilantro and Garlic Sauce” in every local retail store.
