Briefly describe your job and responsibilities.
As Area Director of Operations / General Manager for The Oaklander Hotel and Concord Hospitality, I oversee and support various properties, including The Oaklander Hotel. Handle, owner and investor relationships. Create a thriving culture for our team members. Ensure guest satisfaction is of the highest quality. Manage overall financial success.
What does a “typical” day at work look like for you?
A typical day: Arriving to work between 7am-8am. Walk the property. Daily morning meetings with our team. Work through daily emails. Have various meetings throughout the day with the hotels I oversee. Additionally, take any calls or requests from the organization and/or boards I’m involved in. Take time out to meet with customers and employees to ensure they have what they need.
What was your first job in the hospitality industry?
Front Desk Agent at the Holiday Inn at Meadowlands, Washington PA.
When did you know this industry was right for you?
During my time at the Holiday Inn, I had a great General Manager who showed me the benefits and high points of being in hospitality. This is when I realized it was a right fit for me.
Briefly describe your career path and how you got to where you are today.
Started as a Front Desk Agent at the Holiday Inn at Meadowlands, Washington PA. This eventually transitioned to a DoubleTree Hotel. Then I was able to work my way to Supervisor in Housekeeping. Then transitioned back to the front desk as a Front Office Manager. Worked my way up to Executive Housekeeper. After this, I moved my way to the Doubletree in Greentree, PA as the Director of Housekeeping. During my time at the DoubleTree in Greentree, I was quickly promoted to Director of Rooms, while cross-training to all departments within the property, including Sales and Food & Beverage. Shortly after, I was promoted to the Director of Operations. Four years later I was promoted to General Manager of the Doubletree Hotel. In 2021, I moved on to The Oaklander Hotel with Concord Hospitality. I was their General Manager for two years and was promoted to include the Area Director of Operations.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The people are my favorite part. I love working with people with different backgrounds, helping people meet their full potential. Interacting with our guests who are from all over the world, making them feel comfortable and at home while staying with us.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Finding new ways to motivate and drive team members. Especially when they’ve already been very successful. It’s a welcome challenge to have long-sustained success.
What advice would you give to students interested in your profession?
Go into the industry with an open mind and open heart. Let your passion lead you. Find great mentors and peers that you would aspire to be and connect with them. Never stop asking questions or asking for advice. Be humble.
What achievement are you most proud of?
The Oaklander Hotel being nominated for Full-service Hotel of the Year for Concord Hospitality.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Spend time with my family. Listen to music and watch sports.
What is your favorite food to make or eat?
Pizza.
What’s at the top of your bucket list?
I’ve always wanted to tour Europe.
